On Thursday 11th-12th July the History department took 40 students and 5 staff to the Somme battlefields for an indepth tour of sites associated with the Battle of the Somme, and in particular the tragic 1st July attack.
First stop was Newfoundland park where students were given a tour of the battlefield by Mr Tomlin.
The group received an excellent tour of the excavated trenches at Thiepal Wood. They visited the Thiepval memorial which contains some 72,000 names of those who died on the some but who have no known graves.
Before they left, the group laid a wreath of handmade poppies made by students and staff.
A few delays on the way home meant they arrived back in Whittlesey very late!
The behaviour of the students was exemplary throughout the trip.
