Our Year 13 Biology students recently had the exciting opportunity to visit the prestigious Wellcome Trust’s Sanger Institute campus, a world-renowned hub for genomic research. The trip provided students with invaluable insights into cutting-edge scientific discoveries and the future of genetics.

During the visit, students engaged with recent graduates working at the institute, learning firsthand about the diverse career paths available in the field of genomics. These discussions provided a unique perspective on the various roles within genetic research and the impact of this work on medicine and society.

A key highlight of the trip was the hands-on workshop where students identified mutated codons in known cancer genes. This practical experience allowed them to apply their theoretical knowledge to real-world genetic analysis, deepening their understanding of how mutations contribute to disease development.

In addition to the interactive activities, students explored the history of sequencing the human genome, gaining a greater appreciation for the scientific breakthroughs that have shaped modern genetics. They also discovered the next big projects in genomic research, from advancements in personalized medicine to large-scale efforts in understanding genetic diversity.

This trip was an inspiring experience that broadened our students' horizons and reinforced their enthusiasm for the biological sciences. We extend our gratitude to the Wellcome Trust’s Sanger Institute for hosting us and providing such an enriching experience.
